White House Closer to Guidance for Ban on Transgender Service Members

A service member with American flag in the backgroundThe President is expected to provide guidelines for the military soon regarding his much-touted transgender ban, according to the Los Angeles Blade.

The story, originally broke by the Wall Street Journal, comes as the Journal obtained a two-and-a-half page memo about the ban. The guidance will end entry for trans* citizens seeking to join the military and end funding for medical treatment for trans* service members. The guidance also requires the military to gauge fitness of service based on deployability. It provides Defense Secretary Jim Mattis six months to implement the new changes.

The President’s policy decision – introduced through a series of tweets on July 26 – caused consternation on both sides of the aisle. It is unclear what will happen to service members who are already serving, military officials have stated no changes will be made until the White House provides specific guidelines for implementation.
